A soldier who was injured while serving in Afghanistan was given a hero’s welcome at a rugby game. Lance Corporal Sean Donlan, of Gomersal, led out the Batley Bulldogs before their match with Barrow Raiders on June 29. Fans gave him a standing ovation as he walked onto the field with the match ball to celebrate Armed Forces Day.

Have-a-go students captured a man who snatched a pensioner’s purse. Magistrates praised the group of plastering students from Kirklees College who sprang into action after seeing a 78-year-old lady have her bag stolen while out shopping. The students were Steven Hunter, from Shaw Cross; Kallam Bees, from Heckmondwike; Declan Marsden, from Batley; Damian Wagstaff, from Horbury, and Callum Carter and Jamie Trepiak, both from Dewsbury Moor.

Concerns were raised that communities would be pitted against each other when Kirklees Council redrew the lines on local committees. Batley and Spen were lumped in together when the council approved plans to change seven area committees to four district committees. A Cleckheaton councillor said this could cause a conflict of interest if, for example, the council decided there would only be enough one library in the whole of Batley and Spen.
