Richard said: “I am feeling a mixture of nervousness and terror because the sum total of my exercise usually involves walking to the chip shop!

“I am hoping this could be the start of many more healthy pursuits for me.”

The Flat Cap 5 was held for the first time last year and raised £600 for charity.

Proceeds from this year’s event are going to the Reporter Series Fund’s chosen charities – Kirkwood Hospice, Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, One Community and Asthma UK.

The race starts at the Leggers Inn at Savile Town Wharf, Dewsbury, at 7pm.

Runners can register on the night for £7 or £5 if they are a member of a running club.

The fastest runners in various categories will receive prizes along with the runner who wears the best flat cap.

Prizes will be presented in the pub, where supper for the runners will also be served.

Organiser Tony Audsley said: “We are expecting 150 to 200 runners. The course is a scenic route which takes in part of the new greenway before heading towards the river and canal, to loop back to the finish at the Leggers Inn.

“We are hoping to have a choir attending and there will be food, beer and prizes afterwards.

“I don’t bother checking the weather in this country as it fluctuates too much but you never know, it could be sun, rain or snow. Bring it on!”
