Rate cut helps new business

A coffee shop in town is the first to benefit from a new scheme to cut the business rates on certain properties to encourage growth.

Novo Coffee House, in Longcauseway, opened in July and had a chunk of its business rate discounted as part of a Kirklees Council scheme to improve Dewsbury town centre, generate jobs and bring in new traders.

Owner Neville Morris said: “It’s really, really helpful, especially for new businesses because of all the other costs, and perhaps even more so in food when you have a lot of wastage while you find out what works and what doesn’t.

“I hope that it is rolled out for other businesses in Dewsbury. We know that some of them need a bit of extra help.”

Dewsbury Chamber of Trade president Trish Makepeace said: “Any cuts in the business rate has got to be good for the town’s businesses. In some shops the rate is more expensive than the rent.

“And if they are filling empty shops it will make the town look more vibrant.”
