The new owner of The White Stag, Huddersfield Road, has changed the pub’s name back to The Railway - the title it held for more than 60 years before switching in May this year.

Landlord Colin Cheeseman hosted an event at the pub last week to celebrate its re-opening and showcase the improvements.

The event included an appearance from Dewsbury-born British super-featherweight boxing champion Gary Sykes.

Mr Cheeseman said: “We are extremely excited to be bringing such a big name back to this great town.

“The Railway acts as a notable Mirfield landmark and we are keeping tradition at the heart of what we do from here on.”

The pub has seen a host of improvements as part of its re-branding including a newly installed dart board and pool table, an improved food menu and beer selection, a refurbished cellar and new kitchen equipment.

And Mr Cheeseman said there was a huge demand to bring back the pub’s original name.

He added: “For us this will be a case of rolling back the years and bringing back the glory days, with The Railway boasting a proud past.”

The pub’s name originally came from train tracks that ran behind bar but were removed in the 1960s.
