Rail firm aims to cut the carbon

Rail operator First Transpennine Express has embarked on a new initiative which will see the station running carbon neutral for one year.

The project is running along with other stations across the network as the company aims to hit 2015 environmental targets.

The company is also encouraging fuel-efficient driving among its drivers, aiming to save enough diesel to drive a medium-sized car four-and-a-half times across the world and cut carbon dioxide emissions by the amount it would take to fill 1,312 train carriages. It also hopes to save enough electricity to make over 11 million cups of tea.

Another aim is to make water savings that equal 40,000 average showers.

First TransPennine Express’ environmental manager, Iain Peacock, said: “It’s very important that we keep improving how we work when it involves the environment.

“We know that our customers are conscious of their carbon footprint and this year we have a number of aims, which will help us reduce our impact as a business.

“We hope these will improve the environment for our colleagues, as well as helping customers achieve their carbon footprint goals.”
