Putting the fun into fundraising

And president Sue West is eager to get others involved in the organisation, which campaigns on a wide range of women’s issues locally, nationally and internationally.

It’s a mix of fundraising for good causes and days out for SIDAD, which covers Kirklees, Ossett and Horbury, and currently has 46 members.

Mrs West, a former nurse, midwife and health visitor in Dewsbury, said: “We raise funds for things like the women’s refuge and the Howlands Centre in Dewsbury.

“We’re very politically aware of women’s rights and issues but we also have a lot of fun.”

Mrs West, who took over from immediate past president Janet Town, chose the theme of ‘Women supporting Women’ for her year in office.

And she has chosen Kirkwood Hospice, which provides specialist care for people with terminal illnesses in Kirklees, as her charity.

Mrs West, now a milliner, said she felt honoured to be president of such a vibrant and friendly club, but added that new blood was always needed.

SIDAD is holding a treasure hunt in Crow Nest Park, Dewsbury, on July 19 in aid of the Howland Centre.

It meets twice a month at the Oakwell Centre in Dewsbury and District Hospital.
