The Porsche Boxster convertible was embedded into the side of their home after careering across the road and clearing a hedge.

No-one was in the bedroom of the Dewsbury Moor home, but Gerald and Janet Pearson have lost many irreplaceable items as the car smashed through the wall at Spen View.

The accident, which happened at around 11pm on Saturday, has brought back painful memories for the couple, whose son, Stephen, was killed in a car crash involving a drunk driver more than 20 years ago.

Mrs Pearson said: “It is only just hitting me. I was numb. Now, I just want to get out of this house.”

Large chunks of masonry and car parts litter the floor of the bedroom, along with smashed glassware and other family treasures in a display cabinet.

Insurance assessors think it could take more than a month to repair the damage.

Mr Pearson, 69, was watching television when he heard ‘an almighty crash’. He went into the bedroom to see the car bonnet and dust and debris everywhere.

“The car was half in and half out of the house,” he said.

Mrs Pearson, 64, was asleep in the adjoining bedroom.

“The driver was standing by the car,” said Mr Pearson. “I asked him if he was okay. The car seems to have cleared the hedge, but took a tree out by its roots. The bonnet was well off the ground.

“The things which are broken are irreplaceable. How do you put a value on those?”

The following evening, the driver, who lives nearby, apologised to the Pearsons.

l A 43-year-old man has been charged with drink-driving and will appear before Dewsbury magistrates later this month.
