This is how many Kirklees councillors have received complaints against them over the last six months

They relate to the behaviour of elected members towards the public, on social media, in the pre-election period and at planning committee.

Ten complaints were received from the public with one from a councillor.

There were also two complaints about named town or parish councillors.

None of the individuals concerned have been identified.

A report to Kirklees Council’s Standards Committee (Sept 15) said complaints had been under the Code of Conduct since the last meeting on March 29 and related to the six-month period since that meeting.

The authority received 11 complaints in total relating to alleged breaches of the code.

That figure included one multiple complaint relating to two councillors. Another complaint concerned three councillors but as they were essentially separate complaints they were recorded as such.

Of the 11 complaints, five were not progressed after the initial assessment

process.

The remaining six complaints are currently being investigated with clarification being sought from the complainant in respect of three of them before they can be considered under the initial assessment process.

Complaints about councillors are dealt with by the council’s monitoring officer, Julie Muscroft.

Since the last report covering the six-month period up to March 29 the overall number of complaints has fallen from 16 to 11, whilst the number of councillors

complained about has also fallen to 11 from 15.

In his report to Standards legal officer David Stickley said: “The promotion and maintenance of high standards of conduct by councillors is an important part of maintaining public confidence in both the council and its members.

“Failure to do so could have reputational implications.”
