The former North Bierley Waste Water Treatment Works, which occupies 57 acres between the M62 and the M606 on the outskirts of Cleckheaton, was sold by Yorkshire Water in 2019 for an undisclosed sum.

Kirklees Council has received 91 letters, including one from Oakenshaw Residents’ Association, principally objecting to the scheme, which forms part of the Local Plan.

They include concerns over the access to the site, the effect of increased traffic on nearby residents, intrusiveness as well as calls for a bridge over the M606 to relieve pressure on local roads.

Other objections have come from Bradford South MP Judith Cummins and members of Bradford Council.

Whilst acknowledging that the site is within Kirklees, in Mrs Cummins’ view, the “access and egress will be via her constituents of Bradford South and it would have a negative impact on their lives”, particularly those living in Lower Woodlands and Oakenshaw.

The first phase of the development, regarding access, will be discussed at Kirklees Council’s Strategic Planning Committee (Sept 16) and is set for approval.

In July developers were served with a one-month stop notice to prevent works on site prior to planning permission being granted.

Kirklees’ Local Plan was adopted in February 2019.

An order from the Government, it includes 31,000 homes, many of which will have to be built within the green belt, as there is insufficient non-green belt land in the borough.
