Paula Sherriff MP quits Jeremy Corbyn's shadow cabinet

Labour MP Paula Sherriff has resigned from her role in Jeremy Corbyn's shadow cabinet.

Ms Sherriff, the MP for Dewsbury and Mirfield, has quit as parliamentary private secretary (PPS) to shadow communities secretary Jon Trickett.

She said she resigned to focus on her constituency work and her role on the health select committee.

She is the latest MP to leave the shadow cabinet after Catherine McKinnell quit as shadow attorney general and Kevan Jones, Jonathan Reynolds and Stephen Doughty also resigned.

The resignations followed the sacking of Michael Dugher as shadow culture secretary in a front bench reshuffle by Mr Corbyn, who was elected Labour leader in September on a huge majority with more than 250,000 votes.

Ms Sherriff tweeted: “To clarify reports, I stepped down as PPS to focus on my campaign to defend Dewsbury and District from Tory cuts and my work on Health Sel Com.”
