Work to begin on £15m state-of-the-art Spen Valley Leisure Centre

Construction firm Kier will start working on site this month when the foundations for the new Spen Valley Leisure Centre will be laid.

To safeguard employees and the community, Kier will be adhering to the Construction Leadership Council’s Site Operating Procedures which are based on the guidance issued by Public Health England.

Phil McDowell, Regional Director Northern at Kier Regional Building, said: “We are thrilled to be working with Kirklees Council to deliver Spen Valley Leisure Centre. The commencement of works on site is a major milestone and we look forward to creating a new all-purpose facility, which will bring swimming and fitness under one roof. We have a wealth of experience in delivering leisure centres across the country and I’m looking forward to seeing the development of this facility as it progresses on site.”

The Spen Valley Leisure Centre facilities will include: an eight lane, 25 metre main pool; an activity pool 20m x 10m with moveable floor; spectator seating in the pool areas; large fitness suite; two fitness studios with flexibility for other use; and a cycling studio. There will also be two changing villages which will include family cubicles, baby change and large team changing areas.

The centre will include a café and aims to be inclusive for all members of the community including facilities for people with disabilities.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Shabir Pandor said: “I’m really pleased to see the start of work on this major capital development project for the people of North Kirklees.

"We are committed to supporting people to be healthy and live independently in their communities for as long as possible. The leisure centre will become a major asset for the local community, attracting more visitors into Kirklees and will help to create a sustainable economy. I look forward to seeing the developments on site as Kier begin the construction phase.”

The new facilities will be open for use in winter 2021.
