Policeman called “plastic copper” as drunken yob throws brick at him

A MAN has been fined for throwing a brick at a policeman after a night out drinking.

Paul Aaron Junior Powell, 21, must pay £165 after the attack on Police Community Support Officer (PSCO) Graham Daniel on October 23.

He appeared at Batley and Dewsbury Magistrates’ Court with Niall James Foley, 20, who was given a fine of £130 for being drunk and disorderly in a public place.

Prosecuting on Tuesday, Anzal Hussain said Powell and Foley had been out together, and went into the Jet petrol station in Halifax Road, Staincliffe, where PSCO Daniel was waiting to be served.

Foley, of York Grove in Upper Batley, asked if he could be served before him. He then asked the officer for a joint of cannabis.

Mrs Hussain said PCSO Daniel told Foley to stop being silly, and Foley responded by swearing at him and calling him a “plastic copper”.

The defendants went outside where they continued to shout and swear at the officer before Powell of North Park Street in Westborough, Dewsbury, picked up the brick.

Mrs Hussain said: “The officer had to move out of the way to stop from being struck.”

The duo were arrested at the scene.

Foley pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly, and Powell pleaded guilty to using threatening words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress. The defendants, who represented themselves in court, said they had nothing to say about their behaviour.
