Police search river after report of person entering the water

Police are continuing to search a stretch of the River Aire following a report of a person entering the water yesterday.

A member of public called police at about 1.25pm on Sunday to report that they had seen someone dressed in dark clothing and a cap go into the water at the weir close to Crown Point Bridge in Leeds City Centre. They were not seen to resurface.

Detective Inspector Phil Jackson, of Leeds District CID, said: “The police and other emergency service colleagues conducted an extensive search of the area yesterday, with support from the police helicopter, but have not located anyone.

“We have returned to the scene in daylight hours today to conduct further searches, with the assistance of the specialist underwater search team.

“We would like to hear from anyone who saw anything around the time of the initial incident or who has any information that could assist.”
