Police probe claims of postal vote fraud in Dewsbury ahead of Kirklees elections

POLICE are investigating an allegation of electoral fraud in Dewsbury.

Enquiries are being made after concerns were raised about a significant increase in the number of people registering to vote by post in the Thornhill Lees and Savile Town areas.

Both areas fall into the Dewsbury South ward where Coun Khizar Iqbal (Con) is defending his seat.

It was Coun Iqbal who first alerted Kirklees Council to potential breaches in electoral procedures.

A police spokesman said: “We have received an allegation of election fraud taking place in the Dewsbury South ward and are currently investigating the report. No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.”
