Police are treating a fire at a barn on Saturday as an arson attack.

Thousands of pounds of hay was destroyed in the blaze off Carr Lane, Dewsbury Moor, which is believed to have been started between 6.30pm and 7.15pm.

The stable, which also housed horses, was well alight when fire crews from Dewsbury arrived at 7.15pm.

The horses were quickly rescued and none were injured.

Fire crews used two large jets on the fire and the farmer used his excavator to help while crews dampened the scene down.

The fire was contained to the barn. Further crews were requested but later returned as the fire went out.

Appliances from Dewsbury, Batley and Cleckheaton attended.

Inspector Jenny Thompson, of the Dewsbury and Mirfield Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We are investigating following a barn fire in Carr Lane.

“The fire, which is being treated as arson, caused considerable damage to the roof of the barn and destroyed thousands of pounds worth of hay inside.

“Anyone who witnessed this incident or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area around this time is asked to call Dewsbury and Mirfield NPT on 101.”
