Police operation takes cars off the road

The fourth phase of a major West Yorkshire Police operation to tackle road safety concerns in Batley and Spenborough has resulted in close to 100 vehicles being stopped and inspected.

Operation Tropicbourne has been underway since last month and has cleared off several illegally driven and unfit vehicles from the area’s roads.

Three vehicles were seized in the most recent set of checks conducted on Gelderd Road in Birstall.

A van and two cars were seized due to drivers not possessing insurance.

One of the car drivers was also found to be driving with only a provisional licence.

Head of the operation, PC Chris Birkenshaw, was pleased at efforts to address residents’ concerns.

He said: “We hope that carrying out these kinds of operations will reassure the public that we will act on any concerns raised to us and have a number of other operations planned in the coming months.”

PC Birkenshaw gave thanks to local businesses for hosting inspections in their car parks during earlier stages of the operation.

More crackdowns are planned by West Yorkshire Police in the coming weeks elsewhere in the district.
