Police attacked with stones and a brick

On May 28 last year, two officers went to the London Park Estate home of Nathan McCarthy after a report of domestic violence.

Kama Melly, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court on Monday that McCarthy threatened to set his dog on officers and appeared to phone people to ask them to come to his house.

Co-accused Jordan Watkinson, 18, arrived and McCarthy, 24, said: “This officer think’s he’s dark. We’ll show him who owns this estate.”

When a group of other men arrived, the officers took McCarthy’s girlfriend out to their police car and found a window had been smashed.

The group, which was joined by McCarthy and Watkinson, hurled abuse and threw stones and a brick at the officers. When one of the police officers threw a stone back, the group fled.

Philip Morris, for McCarthy, asked the judge to consider a supervision order and Sam Andrews, for Watkinson, said his client had shown remorse.

McCarthy, of Northway Gardens, was jailed for seven months and Watkinson, formerly of Northway Gardens, was jailed for four months. Both admitted affray at an earlier hearing.

The Recorder of Leeds Judge Peter Collier said: “This was completely unacceptable behaviour and I don’t think either of you entirely understand that, especially you McCarthy.”
