The victims were in Greenside Estate, behind Old Bank Road, when they were approached by two men wearing dark clothes and balaclavas, who brandished a small black handgun.

They were pushed to the ground when the robbers demanded money, between 5.30am-5.40am.

The robbers made off with a rucksack containing two mobile phones and a small amount of cash, but the mother and son, who were in their 50s and early 20s, were not injured.

After the attack the robbers made off through a ginnel back to Old Bank Road, running past the Thirsty Man pub, towards London Park estate.

Det Insp Mark Walker, of Kirklees CID, said: “Anyone in the area who may have seen these two men or anyone acting suspiciously should call Kirklees CID on 101.”

He said the men may not have been wearing balaclavas before the robbery took place.
