Cash and community spirit is helping to improve life on Dewsbury Moor’s estates.

In 2010 the Big Lottery Fund picked the area as one of 50 in England to receive a £1m Big Local Trust grant.

So far, Big Local has spent £10,000 supporting local groups through its Quick Wins fund. This has boosted youth, sports and theatre groups and local tenants associations in Dewsbury Moor.

The latest project will see Big Local, lead by the Rev Kathy Robertson, team up with Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing to transform a large empty property into two homes. Local people will be given the chance to gain valuable experience by working on the project.

Consultation has been underway to decide how to spend the rest of the money and further projects should be underway in 2014.

Shane Hussain, co-founder of Dewsbury’s Sports Education And Training 3 in Communities, gets young people in Dewsbury Moor into sport and recently set up Dewsbury Celtic’s first girls rugby team for under-14s.

With Reaching Communities funding, he has also organised trips to Lawrence Batley Theatre for young people who would not normally experience theatre.

He also hopes to secure more cash to continue the Wacky Wednesday’s project, which provides activities for children in Dewsbury Moor over the school holidays.
