Plans for new sports area at Al-Hikmah

A new floodlit sports area could be built at the Al-Hikmah Centre in Batley for the community.

Aziz Rehman has applied to Kirklees planners to develop the multi-use games area at the Track Road facility.

The space would possibly include a 37 metre by 27 metre football pitch and 4.5 metre wide cricket practice bay.

A design and access statement submitted with plans reads: “The purpose of the development is to serve the recreational and sporting needs of the local community (including schools) and is not a ‘members only’ facility.

“The multi-use games area will supplement other sporting and recreational facilities on site and will support activities such as five-a-side football and cricket practice, which will then free up the centre’s four-court sports hall for other popular sports that struggle to get time in the indoor spaces.”

Documents also state that because of the work that the Al-Hikmah Centre does to promote inclusion and equality, the project has secured the backing of Disability Sport Yorkshire.

Mr Rehman has applied for the space to be available between 8am and 10pm on Mondays to Fridays and 9am to 10pm on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays.

It would be surrounded by meshed fencing and include artificial grass. The floodlights would automatically go off at the planned closure time.

The proposed development would be placed at the back of the centre on a former garden area.

The plans are under public consultation until May 20. Visit www.kirklees.gov.uk for more information.
