Plans for new education facility in Savile Town

The Indian Muslim Patel Society wants to demolish it current buildings and replace them with a new three-storey building.

Classes had been taught in buildings on the site at the junction of Warren Street and South Street at one time as well as the nearby Zakaria Mosque.

But all classes are currently being held in the mosque because of the poor condition of the other buildings.

In its application, the society said: “It is important to understand that our overall goal is to improve the quality of both the site, but also general aesthetics of the location together with creating an excellent teaching facility for the community.”

The buildings to be demolished were originally built as a primary school in the 1960s and have been extended over the years.

There will be no parking for the new facility, but the application said most pupils came from the local area.

“The current operation does not have the benefit of any dedicated off-road parking and given the constraints of the subject site there is no potential to create any parking within the site boundary and the existing on street parking will continue,” it said.

“The purpose of the facility should not be forgotten that it provides a need for the ‘local’ community who live within the local conurbation.”

It said site users were encouraged to walk, cycle or make arrangements to share lifts where possible.

Public consultation on the plans closes on Saturday.
