Plan to replace Thornhill Parish Church stained glass window with replica

The 15th century original is deteriorating, so clergy and worshippers at Thornhill Parish Church want to commission a replacement and put elements of the medieval glass in a special chapel.

The glass in the east window of the Savile Chapel is a rare depiction of the Heavenly City and was recorded in detail by restorers in the 19th century.

Now, a conference has been arranged to start the process of creating the replica.

Titled A New Jerusalem, the conference – set for October 13 – will bring together glass science, art history and conservation. It will provide a case study of the East Window and chart the birth of a new one.

Church project manager Brian Pearson said: “The conference aims to examine the how and why of this uniquely fascinating scheme and promote informed debate.”
