Photography students snap up top awards

Top photography awards were snapped up by creative students at Kirklees College.

Pictures captured by contemporary photographic arts students at Batley School of Art wowed judges at the British Institute of Professional Photographers Yorkshire Regional Awards.

Dozens of photographers were part of the event, which was held at Dewsbury’s Wheelwright Centre.

Stephanie Carlin won the Yorkshire Regional Student Photographer of the Year award with an image inspired by the film Black Swan.

Students Jenna Codd, Maria Newton and Melvin France also scooped merits for their entries in the competition.

Katrina Whitehead, award leader for contemporary photographic art, said: “It was a fantastic evening, with nearly 50 photographers attending the event from all over the Yorkshire region.

“It is a great achievement that a Kirklees College student has won the overall Student category and that a former student has won two trophies.”

College lecturer Stewart Jackson won two merits in the Non-Commissioned category.

Meanwhile, former student and professional photographer Chrissy Eastwood beat competition to win the Architectural category and Commercial Photographer of the Year award.

The students’ winning pictures will be on display at the college’s photography department as part of its end of year show on June 19.
