Petition to save Batley library gathers fresh support

The petition was re-launched by the Batley History Group after it was learned that the future of all libraries in Kirklees was now being scrutinised as the council tries to cut its spending.

History group chairman Malcolm Haigh said people in the town were disgusted that the library’s future was once again in the melting pot.

He said: “We thought the issue had been settled last year when Kirklees withdrew the closure threat following a drive by the history group which had culminated in more than 7,000 people signing a protest petition.”

The celebrations had been comparatively short-lived, however, with the announcement a few weeks ago that the council was going to have cut back on some library services.

“I know that Batley people are astounded at this new threat,” said Mr Haigh. “I took the petition into town and people could not wait to add their names.

“It is important we emphasise to the councillors the importance of Batley Library to the town. Not only is it a vital part of the outstanding conservation area covering the Market Square, but it also provides services for all age groups.

If the library is closed I am certain that the town as a whole will suffer. It is up to everyone to demonstrate this by actively seeking out a protest petition to sign.”

History group members will be providing the opportunity to sign on the town centre streets at various times, but petitions can also be signed at The Flower Shop in Branch Road and the Batley DIY Centre at the junction of Well Lane and Commercial Street.
