The total now stands at 1,200, as people from Cleckheaton continue to show the council they will not let their library go without a fight.

Coun Pinnock said: “It is gathering pace. I know it will be tough, but we can change this.”

Plans to close Cleckheaton Library were revealed last month at a Kirklees Council policy committee meeting.

The council said it has to make huge savings in the next few years, and one of the plans to claw some of the money back involves closing all but two libraries in Kirklees, Dewsbury and Huddersfield.

Members were told at the time that it was possible that library services in Cleckheaton would be moved into Spenborough Town Hall.

The Kirklees library service restructure will be ongoing until April 2017.
