PC Mark Goodlad had just passed the test to join West Yorkshire Police’s Dogs Section as a dog handler when he was hit by a lorry on the M1.

Now a plaque has been unveiled in his honour at the newly opened Goodlad Suite at the force’s Dogs Section at Carr Gate, Wakefield.

Dewsbury-born PC Goodlad, 41, was helping a stranded motorist near Wakefield when a lorry veered onto the hard shoulder and struck him.

His widow, Helen, said: “The plaque is really beautiful and very classy. Mark would have liked it very much. It’s a really nice touch from West Yorkshire Police and is very much appreciated.”
