Youngster makes Christmas candles to raise money for Batley charity yet again

A caring eight-year-old has helped out a Batley charity for the second time in four months by making and selling homemade candles in time for Christmas.

Violet Miller has raised £144 for TCD, a charity based out of Jo Cox House which provides vital support to individuals facing mental health challenges, including outreach programmes in schools and community settings.

In August, the youngster raised nearly £200 for the charity by creating and selling bracelets. Deciding she wanted to help the charity again, this time she has turned her hand to the “challenge” of making 38 candles, with the use of ethical and vegan ingredients, with people buying them for Christmas presents.

Violet’ mum, Louise Morby, who is the chair of the board of trustees at TCD, said:

“This was challenging for me as well as her. Candlemaking is not easy, as we found out. It requires a lot of patience and planning as it is quite technical. But she just took it in her stride and she taught me how to be patient.

“She wanted to do something again for TCD at Christmas time, and used a candlemaking set which her Gran had bought her. And she really went for it. She designed all of the tins and put TCD stickers on them, she did an inventory and worked all of the pricing, and then delivered them all by herself.

“And they were all really nice candles. She nailed it. She has done great and I am so proud of her.”

Asked how important the funds raised will be for the charity, Louise said:

“It means it can go into the pot particularly for packages we are putting together for service users who may not have the money that others might have, so it can go directly to basic care needs.

“Any fundraising is greatly received.”

Louise also confirmed that TCD will be looking to expand in the new year to the Calderdale and Bradford areas.

And it seems Violet’s prolific fundraising will continue in 2026 as well.

Louise said: “She has now got her official volunteer TCD lanyard which she wore doing her deliveries. It was so cute.

“And she will be doing more fundraising at Easter and then in the summer.”
