They’re a chance to look deeper into West Yorkshire’s past as buildings are opened, guided walks led, and new resources made available.
In previous years there would have been more of a focus on historical buildings throwing their door open to the public.
But those leading the events have had to be a little more creative this year.
Here, we’ve put together a list of just a few what will be available to see from September 9 to 18 in Wakefield, Calderdale and Kirklees.
But those leading the events have had to be a little more creative this year.
13. Past Retail & Social Gillygate, Pontefract
Friday, September 9 at 3pm, Saturday, September 10 at 2.15pm and Sunday, September 18 at 3pm. Join Pontefract Civic Society on this walk and find out about Gillygate’s past. A meander along Gillygate highlighting its rich past, and a visit to the time capsule that is Holmes the Printers. Find out where Pontefract's first postmaster lived, the voters that had to walk the gangplank, the theatre; the 400-year-old house, the pub where the back became its front entrance, the widening of the street which enabled the building of the printers and the explosion that brought it tumbling down. 14. Elizabeth Moxon’s Market and Produce Tour
Friday, September 9 at 11am and Friday, September 16 at 12noon. The Windmill Inn, Wool Market, Pontefract. Join Pontefract Civic Society for a social distanced walk around Pontefract town centre, the theme of which is Elizabeth Moxon, 18th century cookbook writer. Elizabeth Moxon wrote a cookbook (English Housewifry), it was first published in 1741 and sold in the town, where she lived. There is a blue plaque dedicated to Elizabeth in the town and this walk will highlight Pontefract at the time of her writings, with emphasis on the markets and produce available to her. We will try to answer the question 'Would Elizabeth recognise the Pontefract of today?' To book and for information visit www.heritageopendays.org.uk. Photo: google maps
