Safer Kirklees are working with licensed venues in Kirklees to display safety messages in bars and restaurants reminding people of their personal safety over the festive period. Keeping your drink on you at all times, keeping your mobile phone secure, looking out for your friends and planning your journey home are the four elements which are highlighted in the ‘Stay safe this Christmas’ campaign.

The campaign comprises of printed posters displaying safety messages as well as beermats which have been printed with individual messages of safety.

Councillor Carole Pattison, Cabinet Member for Learning, Aspiration and Communities, said: “The Christmas period is an extremely busy time for Kirklees with many taking to the towns for Christmas shopping and to enjoy the festivities that are on offer during this time of year. The safety of those in the town centres across Kirklees is extremely important to the Safer Kirklees Team and that is why the day of action in Dewsbury Town Centre follows on from a successful evening of action in Huddersfield Town Centre which took place on Friday, December 6.

“A big thank you to the Safer Kirklees team for organising this day of action and of course thank you to West Yorkshire Police, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and CHART for your commitment to keeping everyone safe throughout the year and especially at Christmas.”

Inspector Chris Hughes, Dewsbury and Mirfield Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Days of action such as these are good opportunities for us to gather with partners and offer residents a one stop safety and advice shop while they are out and about ahead of Christmas week.

“We’d urge residents who see our stall to pop along, have a chat, and get up to speed about what we’re up to in their community and what we can do help them stay safer and protect their possessions and property.”
