£100,000 re-fit sees bar re-open after 15 months

The owner of a Mirfield wine bar has re-opened his new establishment in neighbouring Brighouse following a £100,000 re-fit and a 15-month wait due to flooding and the pandemic.

George Alexander, who has had Alexander’s Bar in Mirfield for three years, took over a former shop in Brighouse in 2019. The bar had only been open for a month before the floods in February 2020.

George took the setback in his stride and used the time to re-invent the bar, turning the flooded cellar into a fun bar that can be hired for private parties or corporate events.

The revamped cellar now boasts bespoke graffiti art on the walls and ping pong tables for a spot of table tennis or even beer pong or golf pong.

After more than a year, Alexander’s Bar on Bradford Road, Brighouse, opened its doors earlier this week as part of the latest stage of the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown.

“The cellar was knee-high in floodwater and we had to strip all the walls out – everything we had done had to go,” said George.

“It was a nightmare and there was nothing that could be saved.

“We’d only been open for a month and then after that Covid happened and we couldn’t have workmen inside.”

George, of Northowram, added: “Over time your ideas change. We decided to bring the look of Alexander’s in Mirfield to Brighouse and create a vibrant live music venue with good vibes, cocktails and gin.

“Before the flood the cellar was a downstairs bar but instead we decided to make it a fun bar and a room that can be hired out.

“We brought in a graffiti artist to create a cool new look.

“I took the year of Covid to design the look I really wanted.”
