Park renamed in honour of town stalwart

The play area on Beaumont Street has been renamed the George Speight Memorial Park, after the former Batley councillor who always had time for everyone.

Mr Speight devoted 32 years of his life to public service in the town, serving on Batley and Kirklees councils. He died last year.

Mr Speight’s son, Joe, said the family was very proud that the ground had been named after their father.

He said: “My father entered politics to try to change people’s lives because his own background wasn’t what he wanted.

“And it is apt that it is a play area as he loved children – he had five of them.”

Coun Gwen Lowe (Lab, Batley West) paid tribute to Mr Speight’s character as an individual and a local politician.

“George was a lovely man and I wish that there were more councillors like him,” she said.

And former Batley councillor Ghulam Maniyar said Mr Speight was of huge importance to his time in politics and that the play area was a fitting tribute.

He said: “When I became a councillor George was like a father figure to me and I am glad his name will still be known.

“There are no play areas here except this one and it is of great benefit to the children in this area.”

Coun Hanif Mayet (Lab, Batley East) said: “I am grateful to the local people who supported this and to the family of George who have come here today.”
