Parents pitch in to tidy up

Shaw Cross Infant and Nursery School invited parents to join children for a spot of litter picking and cutting back vegetation.

The school held the two-day tidy up after new fencing was put up to protects its grounds from fly-tipping.

Acting head teacher Janet Drury said: “We’ve got really beautiful school grounds but the old perimeter fence went thought the middle of the school field. Members of the public thought it was open ground and we couldn’t really let the children out onto it in the summer.

“Last year, the children asked why they couldn’t go on it. We managed to get some funding with the help of the local councillors so we could get a new fence.”

The tidy-up of the playing fields and a wooded area in the grounds is part of ongoing work to teach the children about sustainability, recycling and protecting the environment.
