Charlotte Akroyd and Claire Ivinson-Beveridge, of Heaton Grange, Hanging Heaton, shaved their hair off to raise money for Cancer Research UK at an event at the Woodman pub.

The pair, who have known each other for a couple of years, organised a fundraising extravaganza on Saturday November 2, which included a raffle, DJ and karaoke.

Charlotte, a team leader at furniture company HSL, said: “Both Claire and I know people affected by cancer.

“We thought shaving our heads would shock people. People jump from planes, we shaved our heads.

“Our target was £2,000 and we have more or less reached it.”

Despite having to invest in a selection of warm hats to guard against the chilly weather, the friends said that they would do it all again.

Charlotte, 26, of Ward Street, Crackenedge, added: “When people stare at us, it makes them see how it feels for people with cancer who can’t actually help it.

“We’ve been hat shopping, but it’s colder than we expected. I’d do it again but perhaps not in winter.

“Everyone’s been really supportive. We’d like to say a huge thank you to our family, friends and colleagues for their support.”
