Pair accused of child killer’s murder to face trial

Two prisoners charged with the murder of a jailed child killer will face trial in September.

Gary David Smith, 47, and Lee William Newell, 44, are accused of killing Subhan Anwar, at HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire in February.

A plea and case management hearing due to take place at Worcester Crown Court today was delayed until July 5 due to failure in video-link technology.

A trial was set for September.

Anwar, 25, was jailed for the murder of Sanam Navsarka in 2008.

Two-year-old Sanam, was tortured by Anwar and her mother, Zahbeen Navsarka, who grew up in Dewsbury. She had 107 separate injuries on her body, all four limbs broken and fractures to both forearms and thigh bones.

Anwar, who previously lived in Batley, lived with Sanam and her mother in Sheepridge at the time of her death.

He was jailed for 28 years following a trial in 2009.
