Overnight closures ahead on M62 near Pontefract

Motorists face delays as work on a £20m scheme to reduce congestion on the M62 near Pontefract continues.

A series of overnight closures will be in place on the stretch between junction 30 at Rothwell and junction 32 at Pontefract throughout October.

The scheme - expected to take until the end of the year to complete - is part of the government’s £317m national ‘pinch point’ programme and will include new CCTV cameras and automatic traffic monitoring between junction 30 at Rothwell and junction 32 at Pontefract.

Data will then be sent to the Highways Agency’s regional control centre in Wakefield which will be able to apply temporary speed limits on new electronic signs which will also be installed.

Tom Howard, Highways Agency project manager, said: “This work will allow us to monitor traffic and help provide more information to drivers along this stretch of the M62.

“In order to minimise disruption to the drivers, the closures have been programmed to run in conjunction with the M1 junction 39 to 42 Smart Motorways bridge waterproofing and resurfacing closures, which are also taking place in October.

“Closures for both schemes will always take place on opposite carriageways to avoid drivers having to follow multiple diversion routes.”
