Steven and Christine Todd were walking their boarder terrier, Oscar, in Crow Nest Park, Dewsbury, on May 23 when he was attacked.

Oscar suffered severe wounds to his neck and had to have an emergency operation.

Mr Todd said: “Oscar is such a friendly dog that when the other two dogs appeared, he didn’t run away because he wanted to play with them.”

But the staffies, which were off their leads, then turned on Oscar in an attack that lasted 10 minutes.

“They were pulling him from side to side,” said Mr Todd. “Oscar was so frightened.”

Eventually Mr Todd, with the help of the other dogs’ owner, and a passer-by managed to break up the fight.

Although Oscar is now making a recovery, Mr Todd believes more needs to be done to stop incidents like this from happening.

He said: “Staffies seem to be friendly with humans, but around other dogs they seem to be very dangerous. I think all owners of dogs like this need to have some sort of licence for them.”
