Kirklees Council’s cabinet backed the plan last week, which will see money spent on resurfacing, reconstructing roads, improving traffic signals and improving footpaths.

Coun Cathy Scott, cabinet member for investment and housing, said: “This is excellent news. Over the next two years we will be undertaking upgrading work to some of the area’s key roads which will help businesses, commuters and residents.”

The A643 Spen Lane, Gomersal; A638 High Street, Flush; A649 Halifax Road, Millbridge; A638 Aldams Road, Dewsbury and Steanard Lane, Mirfield will benefit from road reconstruction.

Meanwhile, the B6117 Market Street, Heckmondwike; B6117 Slaiwaithe Road, Thornhill Lees; B6117 Church Lane, Thornhill; C581 Overthorpe Road, Dewsbury and B6123 Batley Road, Heckmondwike will all be resurfaced.

Councillors in North Kirklees are also being given cash to decide on improvements and maintenance to residential estate roads, pavements and street lighting in their own wards.

Coun Mehboob Khan, leader of Kirklees Council, welcomed the investment, but added: “People will still have complaints about uneven roads and potholes but we are doing our best to try to arrest the deterioration in our road network.”
