What a top night we had

There is always, with this type of high-profile event, a great deal of complex planning, conducted over long months.

On the day the air cadets from Mirfield’s 868 Squadron AFC were first to arrive to practise to ensure the display was precision led for the Corps of Drums.

On the night, all the months of hard work paid off. The air cadets formed the reception guard and the colours duly marched on as the guests were seated. The injured veterans (Band of Brothers) were piped on by the Bradford City Pipe Band.

They then played their programme headed by the two smallest, youngest, accomplished highland dancers I have ever seen.

Look North’s Christa Ackroyd gave some amusing life anecdotes and was a ‘real trooper’ and went down very well.

The Air Cadets Drum Corps were next into the arena, after inspection by the deputy lord lieutenant. Their display was enthusiastically applauded. It is noteworthy that after the display, hot and tired from their 10am start, they then raised more money by playing at an adjacent wedding function.

After the meal the raffle and auction were held, raising over £2,000.

Party time was started by local girl, singer Amy Rose and was followed by rock band Last Dutch Heroes. All the entertainers gave their time and effort free, which is a very kind gesture indeed. They were all to the highest standards of showmanship of their kind.

The evening was rounded off with a disco.

Some kind person remarked to me how much they enjoyed the ball saying: “It was very well-oiled!”

So, from the man who only had one glass of orange squash all night, thank you again.
