We can all do our bit to create jobs

ThosE of us who have watched the news recently will be aware that the Coalition government public spending cuts will hit Dewsbury hard. Like many northern ex industrial towns, Dewsbury has become heavily dependent on government spending. This is soon to come to an end. In the words of Liam Byrne MP, the Secretary of State for the Treasury in the last Labour government, to his coalition successor “All the money’s gone. Good Luck”.

This means that Dewsbury cannot rely on government money. Instead the good people of Dewsbury must help each other.

As individuals there is little that we can do. However, together we can accomplish a great deal. Here are some practical suggestions on how the people of Dewsbury can help each other and help bring prosperity back to our town. People have criticised me for thinking small. However, remember the old proverb, “From little acorns grow mighty oaks.” My suggestions may seem small, but if they only create one job in Dewsbury, in my opinion it will be worthwhile.

STEP ONE If more people bought the Reporter, with increased circulation, it could take on more staff. If Dewsbury residents put more adverts in the Reporter that might lead to more jobs being created.

STEP TWO if, after paying your essential bills you have some cash left over, go to the local pub. As you drink your pint say to yourself “I am doing my bit to keep this pub open and create jobs in Burton”.

STEP THREE when you go to the supermarket ignore the serve yourself machine. Go to a real person. The more we use real people in Dewsbury the more the supermarkets will have to employ Dewsbury people to serve us.

STEP FOUR if you are on benefits, ask the local Job Centre to pay you by giro. This will mean extra postal workers to deliver your giro and more custom at post offices.

STEP FIVE if you are in work and have some spare cash, why not advertise for a part time cleaner or gardener.

STEP SIX if you are not already a member of a trade union, join one immediately. To their eternal credit the Labour Party and trade unions are taking on extra staff. The more members they have, the more staff they can take on.

STEP SEVEN visit Dewsbury market. The more trade it has the more jobs it creates. Simples!

STEP EIGHT visit the Arts Council. The more customers they have, the more staff they need.

STEP NINE visit the Bus Museum, the more customers they get, the more staff they need.

These are just a few suggestions that I have thought of to help the people of Dewsbury. I am certain other people can think of other ways to help. Remember, it does not matter how small your idea may seem, as long as it creates jobs for local people it will be worthwhile. Perhaps the Reporter could run a regular column devoted to ideas on how to protect and create jobs in Dewsbury.
