Plan is just a smokescreen

I AM angry that by suggesting Kirklees Council can be split, the Conservatives are misleading local people. The idea of a split may appeal to many but it is unlikely to be implemented in the foreseeable future. Why then has this idea been floated now?

More and more people are recognising that cuts to local services and growing unemployment are the result of the Tory-led Government’s unwarranted policies. With local elections due in May the Kirklees Conservatives have realised they are going to be blamed for their government’s failures. They would like something to distract attention.

The idea of splitting Kirklees Council is intended to provide the smokescreen they desire. Even if there were a number of smaller councils for our area, they would face the same kind of basic problems as Kirklees. Those problems arise, not from the existence of Kirklees Council, but from the Government’s disastrous policies.
