Letter: Armed Forces Day was very special

Firsty, two weeks ago, the car wash, raising funds for the youth section of the Royal British Legion and 868 Squadron ATC.

Secondly, Armed Forces Day, a national day to celebrate the hard work of our Armed Forced in dangerous and austere times.

Prior to the official ceremonies we had an unexpected visit from Mirfield’s newly appointed town crier, resplendent in summer dress.

After a few cheery words followed by a robust God Save The Queen, a drum call for the Dunkirk Veterans Standard to come forward to be blessed struck out. The standard was blessed by our chaplain Ian George and town councillor David Pinder gave a short address regarding its history and future entrustment.

The presentation of the Armed Service Lapel Crests to local veterans was made by the Queens representative Deputy Lord Lieutenant Major Ashley Rawlins OBE and Simon Reevell, who did them proud with a few kind words, a vigorous handshake and a cheery smile. The crowd applauded as each individual stepped forward, it was a very proud and pleasing moment.

This was followed by a silent drill display by the cadets of 868 squadron who were immaculately turned out and a credit to senior staff.

Afterwards there was an excellent display of music and drum skills by the talented percussionists from 868 squadron. Well done.

A lot of people were made very proud on this occasion and we ensured that the Dunkirk spirit will always prevail.
