Bus stop rule should be for everyone

I AGREE with the taxi drivers (Bus stop ban bad for trade, Reporter, January 6).

They are being helpful, which is more than I can say for bus drivers who bypass the market bus stop and go on Northgate! Why not make Northgate the bus stop for all the buses and stop private cars parking there?

You don’t see cars parked in bus stops in Leeds. Imagine if cars were parked on the Headrow. Market Street and Boar Lane in Leeds would be gridlocked.

So why does Dewsbury allow it?

I WAS very interested to read in the Reporter that Kirklees Council has a policy of fining all drivers caught parking at bus stops. Last year I complained to Metro about vehicles which regularly parked at a bus stop in Leeds Old Road, Heckmondwike, and asked for something to be done about it.

I was fed up of having to stand 10-15 yards from the stop. One time the bus driver failed to see me and didn’t stop.

Metro arranged a site visit with Arriva buses and Kirklees Council highways officers. On May 6, 2011 Metro responded saying nothing could be done because to do so would reduce the space available for local residents to park. This contradicts what the council spokesman said the Reporter on January 6, where he rightly claimed it was unsafe for cars to park at bus stops because it meant passengers having to get off buses in the road as a result.

If we are to have a policy on cars parking at bus stops it needs to be consistent.
