Ms Brabin spent time at the Al Hikmah Centre in Batley, and thanked the medical staff and volunteers who have given their time to roll out the Covid-19 vaccine across the borough.

This vaccine centre was set up by Curo Health, the federation of North Kirklees GPs, which is staffing the centre.

“My mum is in her 80s and this vaccine is the key that will allow me, and so many others with elderly relatives, to go and give her a hug and get back to some sort of normal.”

She spoke to patients at the centre, many of whom said that they want to be able to live normal lives again, and expressed hope that they’ll be able to see their families face to face soon, rather than through a screen.

Ms Brabin went on to praise the doctors, nurses and support staff working at the vaccination centre.

She said: “Every single person working here today is doing so as part of a larger effort to get us moving on from this virus.

“GPs and practice nurses are already the backbone of our health service and we see once again how important primary care is, alongside hospital care.

“I also really want to thank both Elaine [Gilliland, CEO of Curo Health] and Dr Ratcliffe for doing everything they could to get this centre up and running quickly and safely.

“They’ve done an amazing job and I am sure the people here in Batley will be grateful for all they have done.”
