Batley foodbank has shared its thanks towards residents and businesses that have donated resources during lockdown.

When lockdown first began, the foodbank struggled to stay well stocked, as many supermarkets had strict restrictions on how much food could be bought at one time.

Many elderly volunteers and supporters were unable to help out or drop off donations due to the Government advising them to self-isolate.

Furthermore, the foodbank saw an increase in the number of people coming to them for help.

Foodbank manager Anna Russell said: “We are still helping a lot of the same people who were struggling before lockdown, but we have seen an increase in the number of people coming to us.

“We’ve helped people that are waiting for universal credit payments, self employed people who have had a drop in work and people who are struggling to feed their children.”

As well as donations from residents, the charity has received support from local supermarkets.

Food and toiletries were donated by customers at Morrison’s and Sainsbury’s in Heckmondwike, Dewsbury and Staincliffe.

Dewsbury Asda customers also voted for the foodbank to receive a £200 cash boost from the supermarket’s latest charity appeal.

“We are so grateful for all the donations we’ve received during lockdown.

“We’d particularly like to thank the local mosques and chruches that have been helping us during this difficult time.

“We ask that people continue to think of us during this difficlut time.

“Any contribution, big or small, is a massive help. Nobody knows what is going to happen in the upcoming weeks and months and we’d like to be able to continue to support as many people in the community as possible,” said Anna.

The foodbank are currently in need of donations of tinned food (such as potatoes, fruit, vegetables, fish and meat), long life milk, toiletries and pet food. They ask that all donations are in date and in good condition.
