Olivia makes cut for Golden Shears

Fashion student Olivia Wray is taking her threads to London after being named as one of just 24 national finalists in a popular tailoring competition.

Batley School of Art and Design pupil Olivia, 20, entered her men’s coat into the Golden Shears competition which attracts entries from around 120 colleges and universities and 70 trainee tailors from the UK, all competing for the £2,000 prize.

The 20-year-old based her jacket on a trench coat design with rural influence and a matching of cloth and textures. On March 21 it will be modelled in front of a panel of high profile judges in the city’s Threadneedle Street.

Olivia’s tutor Sam Hudson said: “This event is very prestigious and I’m incredibly proud that one of our students has been shortlisted. For Olivia’s work to be showcased on such an important stage, competing against tailor’s assistants from Saville Row is an achievement its own right.

“She’s really looking forward to the event and, regardless of the end result, this will be an excellent accolade to have on her CV.”
