Upper Batley High School was visited by Ofsted inspectors in December last year and after lessons, pupils and staff were assessed, the school was given an upgrade.

Headteacher Ms Samantha Vickers said: “We are over the moon. It’s the first time since 1997 that the school has been graded as ‘Good’ and the first school in Kirklees to have gone from a four rating (Inadequate) to a two (Good) in 12 months.”

The report says that the school has “relentlessly tackled the weaknesses that previously led to a decline in standards” and pupils are “polite, courteous and respectful of one another.”

Ms Vickers said: “The quality of teaching has massively improved and we are fortunate to have subject specialists. Nearly all subjects are at national average or above.

“The children are enjoying their lessons and coming to school, which has led to attendance improving.”

The report said: “This is an improving school in which standards are rising.”

Ms Vickers said: “We are all really proud. All the staff, students, governors - we all work together as a team.

“We think learning should be fun. When the announcement was made in school on Monday, a conga line made its way through the corridors. There really is a Batley buzz.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to all members of staff and pupils for all their hard work. It’s been a fantastic team effort.

“We are all very proud to be members of this school and we are hoping our next journey will be to ‘Outstanding’.
