In an email sent to Mirfield’s Kirklees councillors last week, the town council offices were listed with three other sites in the town to be discussed for sale by Kirklees Council.

Mayor of Mirfield Vivien Lees-Hamilton said at the meeting: “Members of the town council have no wish to be relocated from this building even if there was anywhere else to go within Mirfield.

“We believe that since devolution of powers has not yet been fully formulated that the building should remain in Kirklees’ ownership.

“MTC is certain it would be an absolute travesty and a catastrophic mistake to dispose of Mirfield council offices.”

At the meeting, councillors agreed to send a copy of the minutes of the meeting to senior figures within Kirklees Council to encourage them to reconsider.

Speaking after the meeting, Coun Lees-Hamilton said: “Where are we supposed to run the town council from? Our kitchens? Kirklees has clearly not thought this through. Those offices have so much potential – if they were brought back into full use, it could impact well on the town centre. “I want the council to change its minds.”

The Kirklees Council cabinet meeting takes place on Tuesday, when the final list of buildings proposed for sale should be discussed.”
