No repairs made to Dewsbury Cemetery’s ailing chapels in 18 months

Dewsbury Regeneration Board promised to work with local enthusiasts in March 2011 following the Reporter’s Help our Heritage campaign. But no formal bids for cash to repair Dewsbury Cemetery’s Grade II listed chapels have been made. And now it seems building owners Kirklees Council and Dewsbury Cemetery Action Group are in a stalemate. The action group told the Reporter it had heard nothing from council officers in months.

But the council said it was waiting to hear from the group.

A spokeswoman said: “The group was offered council support to help them put together any applications, but we have not heard from the group.”

The council is responsible for the maintenance and care of the buildings, but says it has no cash.

It is counting on the action group to bid for external grants.

Now a regeneration boss has agreed to step in to break the deadlock.
