Dewsbury TV will cover news from the town, Batley, Mirfield, Horbury and Ossett. Simon Reed, 36, said the channel would provide truly local television news for the area.

He and co-founder Keith Merrick came up with the idea after discussing the need for a local TV news service that does not cover a massive area.

Mr Reed said: “Most of the TV news you see isn’t local as such. We are going to be showing the good things and the bad things as well as local issues.

“It’s things that you wouldn’t necessarily see on ITN or Look North,” he added.

The programmes, which will be put online once a week, are being produced by local volunteers. The first broadcast, which appeared on Youtube last night (Thursday), features coverage of Armed Forces day in Mirfield, Dewsbury’s Rugby League day and a mosques versus churches charity football match, all of which took place last weekend.

The Dewsbury TV team want as many people to get involved, either by volunteering to help with putting the show together, or by sending in sound, video and pictures to be part of the programme.

Mr Reed said: “We want it to be accessible so that people can approach us. We want to be able to go and show the good things that are happening in the community.”

Volunteers are hoping to put out two shows a week as soon as they are able.
