New planning application for Westborough community centre

A BUSINESSMAN has submitted fresh plans to set up a community centre.

Terry Zaman originally submitted a planning application to extend the former Westborough Happiness Club in January.

But the application was withdrawn in March after concerns about parking and road safety were raised.

Now Mr Zaman has put in a fresh application to build extensions on the building in Mallinson Street.

He hopes to use the centre to provide counselling sessions and drop-in advice for the young and elderly.

There are also plans to use the building for English and Arabic classes, youth awareness classes, computer classes and guest speeches.

According to the design and access statement, the centre is intended to be used by people living within walking distance of it.

The plan proposes building extensions to the front and rear of the building.

This would see the existing hall on the ground floor enlarged to bring the front of the building in line with neighbouring properties.

There would also be alterations made to the roof of the building and two off-street car parking spaces created.

There is no plan to increase the size of the prayer hall, but a shoe rack area and extra toilets would be built.

Public consultation on the proposal began last week. Comments can be submitted to Kirklees until August 6.
